Schalke midfielder Sven Vermant could possibly be staying in Gelsenkirchen despite being told he was surplus to requirements earlier this season.

The Belgian had been told that his current deal would not be renewed at the end of this season, but a series of injuries have given him the chance to play first team football again in recent weeks and his impressive performances look to have prompted a change of heart by the Royal Blues.

"We've got time until June 30th to discuss his future," Schalke coach Jupp Heynckes said.

"We shall wait and see how he continues to play and then get together to chat about both his and our future plans.

"We shall have to wait and see if we can find a solution that suits both sides."

The news has obviously pleased the former Brugge star, who has now stated that he will not be looking to leave Schalke during the Bundesliga winter break.

"I could well imagine staying at Schalke," Vermant commented.
