Schalke-bound Ailton reminded Werder Bremen fans of what they will miss next season with a hat-trick in their 3-1 win over Bochum, while leaders Stuttgart edged past Hannover 3-1.

The South American hit-man bagged two early goals, to put the home side in control, before netting his third shortly after the break from the penalty spot.

Frank Fahrenhorst gave the visiting fans something to cheer when he netted after 75 minutes, but Werder already had the points in the bag.

Stuttgart remain the Bundesliga front-runners after a hard-fought win over Hannover, Imre Szabics opened the scoring on the half hour mark before Silvio Meissner doubled their tally late on.

Thomas Brdaric pulled one back minutes later to give the visitors hope, however Meissner's second with the last kick of the game ended their hope of gaining a point.

Ten-man Bayer Leverkusen dropped points on the leading pack after being held to a 2-2 draw away to Borussia Dortmund.

The visitors were lucky to take anything from the match as a first half from Salvatore Gambino put Dortmund in firm control.

Oliver Neuville pulled one back before the interval, however their task was made harder after Diego Placente bagged two quick yellow cards to earn an early shower.

Despite being a man light Marko Babic bagged an unlikely point with an equaliser after 77 minutes.

Bayern secured bragging right in Munich following a stormy 1-0 victory over city rivals 1860.

Roy Makaay's first half goal settled the tie, but not before Andreas Gorlitz and Hasan Salihamidzic both saw red in the second 45 minutes.

Cologne remain rotted to the foot of the table after Sergej Barbarez's goal was enough to give Hamburg a 1-0 away win.

Borussia Monchengladbach boosted their survival prospects with a 3-1 away win over Wolfsburg.

Stefan Schnoor equalised Joris van Houdt's early strike, but it proved a false dawn for the Wolves.

Normal service was resumed in the second half for the visitors with Arie van Lent and Joonas Kolkka adding further goals.

Hansa did their relegation fight the world of good with a 1-0 away win over Schalke. Razundara Tjikuzu's strike early in the second half settled the tie.
