German big-guns do battle for Roman

WERDER BREMEN are reportedly leading the chase for Kaiserslautern's highly-rated goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller.

Former German Under-21 custodian Weidenfeller (pictured) has informed The Red Devils management team that he is no longer willing to play second fiddle to first choice Georg Koch.

Borussia Dortmund, Wolfsburg and Hannover have all been alerted by the news and are watching the situation closely but Werder are favourites to steal a march on their rivals and snap up the 21-year-old.

Current number one at the Weserstadion is Frank Rost but the 28-year-old is set to join rivals Schalke at the end of the season increasing coach Thomas Schaaf's need for a new man between the sticks.

Klaus Allofs, Bremen sporting director, is confident a deal will be struck claiming the shot-stopper is "thinking the same way as us."
