Mainz coach Kasper Hjulmand has been given a vote of confidence following his side's second cup elimination in just over a week.

After crashing out of the Europa League in the third qualifying round to Asteras last Thursday, Mainz were sent tumbling out of the DFB-Pokal on penalties by third-division side Chemnitzer after the match finished 3-3 after normal time before the sides shared four more goals in extra time on Friday night.

Hjulmand only took charge of the club in July, replacing Thomas Tuchel after he resigned at the end of last season. In spite of the poor string of results, however, his club are standing by him.

"The coach fundamentally has our total backing," said Mainz's general manager Christian Heidel. "We are going to get through this together."

"Of course it's not very comforting for a coach when you have your very first two competitions and you are knocked straight out of them.

"When you see how hard he is working, then of course it's anything but nice. But we've seen this situation before and we should try not to read too much into it."
