Werder Bremen's hopes of signing Nigeria striker Joseph Akpala have been thrown into doubt after their cup upset.

Cup upset has consequences in move for Club Brugge star

Werder Bremen's hopes of signing Nigeria striker Joseph Akpala have been thrown into doubt after they suffered a shock elimination from the German Cup. Club Brugge star Akpala looked set for a move to the Bundesliga and reports had suggested a €1.3million (£1m) fee had been agreed for the 25-year-old, who has just one year left on his contract. But Bremen were over the weekend stunned by third-tier Preussen Munster in the cup and general manager Klaus Allofs has admitted the signing of Akpala has become more difficult. Allofs told Deutsche Presseagentur: "From our point of view, Joseph Akpala is an interesting player we would like to sign. "Usually, there were just details left to complete the deal. But now we have a different situation. We had simply taken into account being in round two of the German Cup."
