Finland international decides against new deal at Bremen
Finland international Petri Pasanen turned down a late chance to stay at Werder Bremen.
The defender is now likely to sign a one-year contract at Austria top-flight side FC Red Bull Salzburg as a free agent.
But the 30-year-old could have stayed with Bremen after being offered a new deal, despite being told in March there would be no extension.
Bremen general manager Klaus Allofs told BILD: "We have had a serious conversation with Petri Pasanen. We discussed his whole situation.
"It was a good and direct talk. In the end he decided to turn to a new challenge. He is leaving our club."
Red Bull Salzburg manager Ricardo Moniz told Austria-based Kurier newspaper: "We are to sign Petri Pasanen. We are in close contact and we hope we can seal the deal very soon."
