Defender sidelined for "several months"

Hamburg defender Collin Benjamin will be out of action for "several months" after tearing knee ligaments whilst on international duty with Namibia. Benjamin, 31, sustained the injury to his left knee during a friendly tie against Swaziland. Upon his return to Germany, Hamburg officials have confirmed he will be out of action for some time. The dedicated defender is expected to sign a renewed contract at Hamburg having stayed loyal to the club since 2002. Despite his recent setback, chairman Bernd Hoffman says the club's decision to offer a renewed deal still stands.

Loyal

"Way before his injury we had discussed with manager Bruno Labbadia the fact we would like to keep Collin at the club beyond the end of his contract," Hoffman told Bild. "Nothing will be changed on this through this injury now. "Collin is the only player who has been at this club longer than me. If there is one role model for loyalty, reliability and faithfulness to a club, then it is Collin. "We will discuss a new deal with him."
