New Hamburg signing Elrejo Elia has urged the club to pull out all the stops to land Sweden Under 21 hotshot Marcus Berg.
The Groningen striker was thought to be close to a move to the AOL Arena but talks have seemingly broken down.
Elia completed his own move to Hamburg last week from FC Twente and admits to being impressed with Berg when the two have played against each other in the Eredivise.
The 22-year-old forward added that Berg would prove to be a big hit at the German club purely because of the amount of goals he would score.
"I have played sometimes against Marcus Berg and he is a killer in front of goal," he told Bild.
"He is a great player that scores loads of goals with his head, but also with his feet. For me he appears to be quite similar to someone like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar."
However, Hamburg chairman Bernd Hoffman indicates that a deal to bring Berg to the club 'is still far off' despite the German club increasing their offer.
Hamburg are thought to have bid £9million for the player but Groningen are said to want £11million, something that the Dutch club's director Hans Nijland confirms.
"They don't offer enough for a striker like Berg. As for now the discussions are over," he told Aftonbladet.
"Marcus is one of the best strikers in Holland, and by that he is worth a lot of money."
Meanwhile Hoffman rejected claims that Real Madrid midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart is set for a return to the club after less than a year away.
"Actually we do not think about Rafael when discussing our proposed summer transfers."
