Switzerland international striker Eren Derdiyok has confirmed that he wants to join Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

The 20-year-old FC Basel star, who is reportedly on the shopping list of Hoffenheim and several other European clubs, told Kicker that he favours a move to the BayArena.

He has long been regarded as one of the hottest properties to come out of Switzerland, and was one of the stand-out performers for his country during their disappointing Euro 2008 campaign.

"It is absolutely normal to want to move abroad at some time and I see the best chances for me personally and for my game in Leverkusen," he said.

Leverkusen have been chasing Derdiyok for several months but have yet to reach an agreement with Basel.

"It is a matter for negotiations," Leverkusen's general manager Michael Reschke commented.

"We would like to sign Eren on 1st January, but if this isn't possible then we can wait until the summer. We want to reach an agreement with FC Basel soon."
