Bayer Leverkusen went top of the Bundesliga following a 2-0 home win over Cologne on Friday.

Defender Manuel Friedrich headed home his second goal of the season to give the hosts a 68th-minute lead.

Substitute Theofanis Gekas then sealed victory with an 84th-minute penalty after Pirmin Schwegler was brought down in the Cologne box.

Cologne remain in ninth place while Hamburg can regain top spot from Leverkusen when they visit third-placed TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday.
