Midfielder damages ligaments in his right knee playing for Holland

Bundesliga leaders Hamburg have been dealt a blow with the news that midfielder Nigel de Jong could be missing for up to a month. The player damaged ligaments in his right knee while playing for Holland in Saturday's 2-0 World Cup qualifying win against Iceland. An MRI scan on Monday revealed the full extent of the injury on the 23-year-old former Ajax man. Hamburg's team doctor Oliver Dierk told the club's official website: "It looks as though Nigel will be out of action for three or four weeks." The news is a blow for Hamburg boss Martin Jol as the Rothosen aim to stay top of the Bundesliga and gear up for their Uefa Cup group phase campaign. It also rules him out of Holland's crucial Group 9 away game against Norway on Wednesday as they seek to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
