Orlando Engelaar is edging nearer to his move to Schalke after the German club agreed a fee with FC Twente.
The midfielder has already accepted personal terms with Schalke and had been waiting for the two clubs to settle on a transfer fee.
Engelaar will be re-united with former Twente coach Fred Rutten at Schalke once the transfer has been rubber-stamped.
Holland international Engelaar, 28, had also been linked with moves to Newcastle and Everton.
Former England boss Steve McClaren, who has replaced Rutten, will see his spending power at Twente strengthened by Engelaar's imminent transfer.
McClaren is expected to use the funds from Engelaar's move to improve his squad ahead of his first season in charge of Twente.
