New FC Twente coach Steve McClaren is hoping to keep star midfielder Orlando Engelaar at the club.

Engelaar has revealed his intention to quit the club this summer as he seeks a new challenge.

The defensive midfielder has impressed for Holland at Euro 2008 and his performances have attracted the interest of a host of clubs.

Schalke are leading the race for Engelaar, with the player already agreeing personal terms with the Germans, but English duo Everton and Newcastle are both monitoring his situation.

McClaren, who was unveiled as Twente's new boss on Tuesday, says he plans to meet with Engelaar and his agent to discuss his future.

"Orlando Engelaar is one of the best players here and he has done well for FC Twente," McClaren told Sky Sports News.

"There are rumours that he wants to move on and go on. I have yet to meet Orlando, I have yet to meet his agent. I am yet to find out exactly what the future holds for Engelaar.

"But you don't want to lose your best players so we will see."
