Poland have asked Uefa for permission to replace injured winger Jakub Blaszczykowski in their Euro 2008 finals squad.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder has been sidelined for two weeks with a hamstring injury, but he trained on Wednesday and coach Leo Beenhakker declared him fit for Sunday's opening match with Germany.

However, Blaszczykowski has aggravated the injury again in training and now he faces missing the whole of the group stages.

Poland have now asked permission to replace Blaszczykowski with Hertha Berlin's Lukasz Piszczek.

"A medical examination and a consequent diagnosis showed it would be impossible for the player to be fit for the group stage," said Polish team spokeswoman Marta Alf.

"Therefore a decision was made to request Uefa to approve the replacement of Blaszczykowski with Hertha Berlin player Lukasz Piszczek."

The 23-year-old Piszczek made his debut in a friendly against Estonia in February and has three caps.
