Nurnberg striker Robert Vittek has been ruled out of Slovakia's next two Euro 2008 Group D qualifiers against Ireland and Wales because of a knee injury.

The Slovakia international reported a pain in his knee during Saturday's 1-1 draw at Cottbus and an MRI scan by club doctors has now revealed meniscus damage.

Vittek will undergo an operation this week and the length of his absence will depend on its success.

The news is a bitter blow to Nurnberg coach Hans Meyer whose side has made a stuttering start to the new Bundesliga season after impressing last term.
