Werder Bremen's Patrick Owomoyela has been sidelined for three months.

The German international limped out of Werder's pre-season warm-up against VFB Oldenburg.

The 27-year-old defender hoped the thigh injury would only be a minor problem, but he has now been told he will miss the start of the new season and beyond.

,Ç£The doctors told me that I tore a string in the lower part of my thigh and look likely to be sidelined for 12 weeks,,Ç¥ Owomoyela told the club's website.

The former Arminia Bielefeld player took the Bundesliga in storm when joining the Weser-Stadion back in 2005 and quickly became a starting member of Jurgen Klinsmann's national team before a long-term injury break cost him his place at the World Cup 2006.

Owomoyela suffered another injury-plagued spell in 2006-07 and his preparations for the new campaign were dealt a major blow when he limped off against Oldenburg.
