Bayer Leverkusen have suffered a blow with the news that striker Eren Derdiyok has been ruled out for up to three weeks after suffering a toothbrush-related accident.
The young Switzerland international striker was in his bathroom when a glass holding his toothbrush fell and shattered.
The 23-year-old then attempted to clear up the mess, but failed to spot a shard of glass and cut his foot open on it.
He was taken to hospital, where he received seven stitches in the wound and is now expected to miss Leverkusen's UEFA Champions League last-16 clash against Barcelona.
The player told Bild: "I did not see the piece of glass when I was on my way to the toilet.
"This is obviously very annoying, but I'm certainly not the first person it has happened to."
Meanwhile, coach Robin Dutt told Cologne newspaper The Express: "Eren was in his apartment when he trod on a shard of glass. The wound has been stitched, but the foot must be rested for at least 10 days.
"Eren will be out for between two and three weeks."
The striker is Leverkusen's top scorer this season with nine goals in all competitions and six in the Bundesliga.
