Ghanaian defender Samuel Kuffour has opted to remain in the Italian top flight and has moved from Roma to Livorno.
The 30-year-old has a glittering trophy cabinet from his time with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, but struggled to adapt since moving to the Stadio Olimpico last summer.
He made just 21 appearances in Serie A last term, but still had a number of offers for his services.
But Kuffour has now joined Messina's Rahman Rezaei and Rijeka's Dario Knezevic in moving to Granata before the transfer deadline.
Roma have brought in Brescia's Costa Rican stopper Gilberto Martinez on loan, as they look to maintain the strength of their backline.
Messina have meanwhile brought in veteran defender Mark Iuliano on a one-year deal.
