CHIEVO are to continue their search for a Japanese player after the club admitted defeat in their quest to sign Kashima Antlers star Atsushi Yanagisawa.

The Flying Donkeys were tipped as favourites to sign the 26-year-old striker this summer but Serie B champions Sampdoria appear to have beaten them to his signature after they failed to match the player's £2.15 million asking price.

However, a club official told the Japanese media that Chievo will keep on looking for an up-and-coming player in Japan.

"We have decided to give up our interest in Yanagisawa," he said.

"Instead, we will search for a promising youngster who we can develop.

"The club will dispatch scouts to several J-League teams in the next few days."

Chievo are currently on tour in Japan to play in a series of friendly matches.
