Italian side Siena are close to agreeing a deal with Middlesbrough that would see Massimo Maccarone stay on loan for another season.

The young Italian notched up seven league goals in just eight starts for Siena, and has expressed his desire to remain at the club for the 2005/06 campaign.

The two clubs have been in discussions for several months, and it appears that an agreement is now close.

The deal is aided by Maccarone's willingness to drop his salary to stay in Italy, and Middlesbrough have left the striker's name out of their pre-season retreat.

Maccarone spent the first half of last season on loan at Parma, but Siena are the club that are currently attracting the Italian ahead of next season.
