Livorno have been rejected in their appeal to overturn Marco Amelia's three-match ban.

The keeper was handed his punishment after being caught by TV cameras insulting and trying to slap a referee's assistant.

The incident took place at half time in the Serie A clash against Cagliari on March 20, and the 22-year-old was immediately landed with a three-match ban.

Despite an appeal by the Tuscan outfit, the Italian Disciplinary Commission have decided to uphold the decision and Amelia will now miss the upcoming fixtures against Lazio, Fiorentina and Udinese.

It was decided that Amelia was guilty of a very grave gesture, and Livorno will draft in Mianmatteo Mareggini to replace him.

Despite being 11th in Serie A Roberto Donadoni's side are just six points from safety with nine games still to play.

The Milan legend will no doubt be hoping that the loss of the Italy Under-21 international does not have a negative impact on the remainder of the season.
