Gianpaolo Bellini will play no further part in Atalanta's battle to avoid the drop after suffering a serious knee injury against Brescia.
Bellini came off worst in a clash with Marius Stankevicious and was taken from the field of play with what appeared a serious problem.
Scans undertaken on Monday confirmed that Bellini had ruptured ligaments in his left knee.
It has not been decided whether surgery is required, with a decision set to be taken when the swelling in the joint subsides.
The club fear, though, that Bellini is likely to be sidelined for some time and may not be fit for the start of next term.
The news will come as a blow to coach Delio Rossi who is striving to keep the club in Serie A, with Atalanta currently rooted to the foot of the table.
