Midfielder returns to San Siro on loan agreement

Alexander Merkel is back with AC Milan, with the Rossoneri having taken him on loan from Genoa until the end of the season. The 19-year-old has been drafted in by Massimiliano Allegri in an effort to help ease a midfield crisis. Milan find themselves short on options in the middle of the park following injuries to Gennaro Gattuso and Alberto Aquilani. They have moved to cover their loss by bringing Merkel, who they snapped up from Stuttgart in 2008, back to San Siro.

Impressed

He moved to Genoa last summer after Milan entered into a co-ownership agreement. Merkel has impressed during his time at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, proving that he is ready to face the demands of Serie A life. "AC Milan communicate that they have taken Alexander Merkel on loan from CFC Genoa," read a statement released on Milan's official website. It is now being suggested that Milan could offer Taye Taiwo to Genoa in exchange for Merkel, with the Nigerian full-back keen to move on after struggling to hold down a regular first-team role.
