Villarreal striker continues to be troubled by a knee injury

Italy striker Giuseppe Rossi is an injury doubt for the Euro 2012 qualifier against Serbia on Friday due to a knee problem. Rossi has been troubled by an issue with his left knee in recent weeks and aggravated the injury during a training session on Tuesday. The Villarreal forward will now be assessed over the coming days to see whether he will be fit to tackle Serbia, with Italy having already qualified for next summer's finals. "He has suffered the same type of problem that he had in Spain," Italy team doctor Enrico Castellacci told Gazzetta dello Sport. "He has a knee hyper-extension. He will remain with us and we will evaluate if he can recover in time for Friday's game." Giampaolo Pazzini and Domenico Criscito are set to miss the game in Belgrade, while Federico Balzaretti is doubtful for Italy, who meet Northern Ireland in their final qualifier next Tuesday.

Cigarini hope

Meanwhile, uncapped midfielder Luca Cigarini believes he is capable of cementing his place in Cesare Prandelli's squad after being called up for the games against Serbia and Northern Ireland. "I'm back in the international set-up and I now don't want to lose this shirt in the future," Cigarini told Gazzetta dello Sport. "I know that it will be hard to find space in the team because I have stars ahead of me like Andrea Pirlo, Daniele De Rossi and Riccardo Montolivo, but I will give my all. "I still haven't spoken at length with Prandelli, but we know and understand each other well."
