Palermo opened up Group H with a 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt at The Commerzbank-Arena.
Eintracht had recorded two victories and seven draws in their first nine competitive games of the season, so it was no surprise to see them match West Ham's conquerors Palermo in a goalless first half.
The German side then opened the scoring a minute into the second half when Albert Streit seized on Ioannis Amanatidis' headed pass and stroked a shot into the bottom left corner.
Palermo responded quickly and drew level when Franco Brienza turned in Roberto Guana's cross from the left (50).
The game appeared to be drifting towards a draw, until Christian Zaccardo popped up two minutes from time to secure three vital points for the Serie A outfit.
