New Palermo boss Luigi Delneri believes the club were right to sell Luca Toni.
New Palermo boss Luigi Delneri believes that the club were right to offload star striker Luca Toni to Fiorentina.The prolific hit-man switched to Fiorentina after protracted negotiations finally came to a close on Friday, meaning the Rosaneri lost the man who claimed 20 Serie A goals last term.
However Toni's loss has been tempered by the capture of Atalanta forward Stephen Makinwa.
The Nigerian star arrived for ‚é¼7.5 million and Delneri is confident that he, and other members of the squad, have the sufficient ability to cope with Toni's departure.
"If Toni didn't want to stay the club have been right in selling him," said Delneri.
"He was a player on who I was counting but in his place are less celebrated players but with quality.
"I'm satisfied with Makinwa's arrival."
Club president Maurizio Zamparini also voiced his opinion that the arrival of Makinwa, and fellow forward Andrea Caracciolo, left the squad in good stead ahead of the resumption of the Italian league.
With Colombian keeper Faryd Mondragon also set to arrive Palermo have been working hard to prepare their squad for Uefa Cup football, and their supremo says there may yet be one more high profile arrival.
"We worked to strengthen us and we did it," said Zamparini.
"On the market there were three big value forwards, Caracciolo, Makinwa and (Mirko) Vucinic and we signed two of them.
"We strengthened in each line, Mondragon will arrive and we will try to complete the team with a signing who would be a real coup."
