Alaves have an option to buy Coloccini for 2,300 million pesetas (£8.78 million) but the Spanish side are not in a position to be able to afford this.
Last summer Alaves sold Cosmin Contra and star striker Javi Moreno (pictured) to Milan in order to balance the books, an annual task for the club's hierarchy. Their policy of taking players other sides have given up on has worked well, but they are still a selling side.
Indeed Alaves recently pleaded with Uefa to release £1.1 million, which they claim was their share of television rights from last season's Cup final with Liverpool, an amazing 5-4 defeat. Club officials have also warned that the end of the campaign will see another two or three sales, in order to maintain financial equilibrium.
Coloccini's performances have forced him into Argentinian coach, Marcelo Bielsa's plans, although he is already a regular at Under-20 level, the star could find himself a permanent fixture in the full squad in the none too distant future.
