Kevin Strootman blow for Roma as midfielder reveals he will be out for longer than first expected

Roma's Kevin Strootman will be out for longer than expected after knee surgery on Friday revealed further injury problems.

The 24-year-old underwent surgery to deal with Cyclops Syndrome, a condition which can cause pain and swelling and is associated with individuals who have undergone cruciate ligament surgery - as Strootman did last March before spending nine months out.

Roma had said on Thursday they hoped to have the Dutch international back in action within a month, but he wrote on Twitter that he will now be out for longer due to complications with the surgery.

"The scar tissue from my previous operation has been removed successfully today," he wrote. "Unfortunately some cartilaginous damage, caused by the knock in the Fiorentina match, was found too.

"This means I have to take a longer rest period than anticipated earlier and I am extremely disappointed that it will take much longer before I can be back on the pitch again."

Strootman, a reported transfer target for Manchester United, has been limited to just six league appearances this season.
