ROMA coach Fabio Capello admitted he learnt that the deal to bring Brazilian defender Lucio to his club was dead by reading the news on teletext.

The Rome club had been hoping to sign Lucio from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen but the player made it clear over the weekend that he would not be joining Capello's side.

Personal terms were thought to be the stumbling block over the deal, which Lucio now calls 'dead.'

Capello was speaking after commentating on the Confederations Cup final between France and Cameroon.

The Giallorossi coach said: "I've seen Bayer Leverkusen's statement on the hotel TV teletext. I've taken note that he (Lucio) is not coming.

"If we looked at him, it means we considered him able to do good things in the Italian Championship."

However, despite Lucio's statement, it is thought that Roma's management will try to resurrect the deal during the early part of this week.
