Roberto Mancini has returned to Inter Milan for a second spell in charge after the Serie A club sacked Walter Mazzarri following a poor run of results.

Inter turned to Mancini after losing patience with Mazzarri following a disappointing start to the season which has left them 12 points adrift of leaders Juventus.

The former Manchester City manager, who left Galatasaray earlier this year, will be unveiled by Inter on Saturday and will be charge for the Milan derby on November 23.

Mancini led the club to three Serie A titles and two Italian Cups in a four-year spell before he was replaced at the San Siro by Jose Mourino in 2008.

The 49-year-old returned to management with Manchester City in December 2009 and guided the club to their first league title in 44 years in 2012.

Mancini was replaced by Manuel Pellegrini at City in May 2013 and took charge of Galatasary, winning the Turkish cup and guiding the club to a second-place finish in his only season in Istanbul before leaving by mutual agreement.

A statement from Inter owner Erick Thohir said: "Today I made the difficult decision to dismiss Walter Mazzarri as head coach. It was a decision that I reached in conjunction with my management team.

"It was a difficult decision because he has been continuously supportive of the direction that we have wanted to take the club, and he has worked tirelessly and selflessly for Inter, with both belief and passion.

"I would like to thank him sincerely for his efforts. However, our goal is to regain our rightful position as one of the very top clubs in Europe and that's why I am so happy to welcome back Roberto Mancini.

"His track record both at Inter and elsewhere speaks for itself, and his experience and hunger for success will drive the team to the next level."
