Inter Milan defender Walter Samuel faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.
Samuel was stretchered off during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Brescia at the San Siro after hyper-extending his knee in the second half.
Inter have confirmed Samuel requires knee surgery after damaging his cruciate knee ligaments and it is feared the Argentine could miss the rest of the season.
"In the coming days reconstructive surgery will be planned," an Inter statement said.
Inter captain Javier Zanetti has backed his compatriot to bounce back from the injury setback.
"Walter has already shown to be able to come back stronger than before.
"We wait for him and the whole team is with him in this moment. Walter is a player who never gives up."
Full-back Maicon also faces a spell on the sidelines after picking up a leg injury against Brescia with the Brazilian expected to be out of action for several weeks.
