Holland coach Marco van Basten has explained his reasons for omitting Edgar Davids from his squad to face England.

Davids has been left out of the Netherlands squad for Wednesday's friendly at Villa Park following an inconsistent season with Internazionale.

Oranje boss van Basten admits the lack of regular football for Davids is the primary factor behind his decision to keep the midfielder out of the group.

"Davids doesn't play a lot with his team, Inter, so he can't be in the best condition," said van Basten.

"This is the reason for my choice."

Davids joined the Nerazzurri from Juventus last summer but has struggled to establish himself under the tenure of Roberto Mancini.

Though he has made 21 appearances for Inter this term, the combative midfielder has appeared in just 13 of the club's 23 Serie A fixtures.

On Sunday, he lasted just 57 minutes at Parma before he was substituted as Inter snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw, after trailing 2-0.

Inter have pledged their support for Davids but, following his international snub, he may consider his future at Giuseppe Meazza if the situation has not changed by the summer.
