Young star Daniele de Rossi scored a late leveller for Roma, but it was Francesco Totti's 100th Serie A goal, a sublime free-kick that proved the best goal on the night.
Vincenzo Montella had opened the scoring for the hosts, bringing the ball down on his chest and volleying beyond Francesco Toldo, only for Esteban Cambiasso to level for Inter.
Juan Sebastian Veron gave Inter the lead with a volley that took a huge deflection off Philippe Mexes and looped into the back of the net.
Alvaro Recoba looked to have given Inter the points when he blazed past Mexes and fired into the top corner to give the Milan side a two-goal lead.
However, Totti's sublime free-kick - which rocketed into the top corner from 25 yards out rejuvenated Roma, and they drew level 16 minutes from time when de Rossi brought the ball down and hammered home at the far post.
Both teams gave everything for a winner, but it did not arrive - and Roma's new boss had to settle for a point in his first game.
Milan moved into the top three with a 3-1 win against Reggina at Giuseppe Meazza.
The Rossoneri have failed to hit the ground running this term, but are getting stronger, and eased to victory on Sunday.
In-form Andrei Shevchenko grabbed the opener for Milan, only for Ivan Franceschini to level.

Palermo beat Bologna 1-0 courtesy of Franco Brienza's strike, whilst Parma were held to a 0-0 draw by Fiorentina.
Late goals from Fausto Rossini and Aimo Diana gave Sampdoria a 2-0 win against Livorno.
