Internazionale president Massimo Moratti has not discounted the option of launching a bid to sign Lazio midfielder Dejan Stankovic in the New Year.

The Nerazzurri have long been linked with a swoop for the Serbia & Montenegro international and could renew their interest during January's transfer window.

Stankovic's contract expires at the end of the season and this has put Lazio in a predicament as an extension does not appear in the pipeline.

Lazio recently intimated they may listen to offers for the 25-year-old over the winter to ensure they at least recoup a nominal amount for the Serb.

Inter would be favourites to sign Stankovic and Moratti admitted the club will explore the potential for luring the gifted schemer to Giuseppe Meazza.

"The matter of Stankovic?" Moratti told Telelombardia. "These are things that will be evaluated in mid-January."

The key to any departure for Stankovic appears to lie in Lazio's continued participation in the UEFA Champions League.

If Lazio sneak in to the knockout phase of the competition, Lazio are understood to be ready to risk holding on to the player until the summer and losing him for nothing.

But if the Roman outfit fail to join Chelsea in the next stage, they are prepared to consider any bids for Stankovic at the turn of the year.
