Zdenak Zeman has quit as coach of Cagliari just weeks into his second stint in charge of the Serie A strugglers.

The 67-year-old Czech was called back to replace Gianfranco Zola at Cagliari last month.

But Zeman decided enough was enough after last weekend's 3-0 home defeat to Napoli which came after players were attacked by irate fans at the team's training centre.

Cagliari, who last won a game on January 24, have lost seven of their last eight games and sit second from bottom on 21 points, nine away from safety.

The Sardinians have the worst defensive line in the competition with 61 goals conceded and have failed to score more than once in a game since a 2-1 triumph over Sassuolo in January.

Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini said he was "very bitter" over Zeman's resignation, describing it as "yet another failure in a season of suffering".
