Edy Reja has revealed that Lazio are set to sign Helder Postiga and that their reported interest in Nicolas Anelka was a 'red herring'.
Anelka had been heavily linked with a move to the Italian club from West Bromwich Albion in the wake of the controversy created by his 'quenelle' goal celebration and subsequent Football Association charge.
He insisted earlier this week that he would be staying with the Baggies at least until the end of the season, saying that he had rejected the chance to join Lazio and a number of other sides.
However, Lazio boss Reja has played down their failure to sign Anelka and insisted their main target had been Postiga.
The experienced Portugal international only joined Valencia in the summer, having previously played for the likes of Porto, Tottenham Hotspur, Sporting and Real Zaragoza.
"The deal for Helder Postiga is going to be closed, he is a player we have been following for one week," said Reja.
"The name of Anelka was a red herring. I wanted a striker of international profile and Postiga is a complete player - I am very satisfied if he arrives. "
Reja also insisted there was no chance of goalkeeper Federico Marchetti leaving the club during the current transfer window.
He said: "He will remain here at least until the end of the season, I can guarantee it."
