Benfica miss out on midfielder as he opts for Fiorentina

Fiorentina are set to complete a triple swoop as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the new season. The loan deals of goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano and midfielder Francesco Della Rocca from Palermo have already been confirmed by the club. However, Matias Fernandez's transfer from Sporting Lisbon is expected to be confirmed in the next few hours. Viviano has been signed on a loan deal with a view to a permanent switch, while Rocca's arrival is just a straight loan. A statement on the club's official website read: "ACF Fiorentina have announced they have received permission from Palermo for Emiliano Viviano and Francesco Della Rocca to undergo their medicals and train with us. The deal for the two players will be formalised in the coming days." Fernandez's agent, Alejandro Santiesteban, confirmed a deal to bring the midfielder to Florence is a mere formality. "Matias has always dreamed of Italian football," he told Corriere dello Sport. "Fiorentina beat off competitors, the last of which was Benfica who until as recently as last night bid for the player. "However, it was Mati who wanted to come to Fiorentina."
