Sampdoria have not given up hope of persuading former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez to become the club's new coach.

Promoted club satisfied with early talks with representatives

Sampdoria have not given up hope of persuading Rafa Benitez to become the club's new coach, despite comments from the former Liverpool manager's agent. Benitez has been linked with the Sampdoria position following the club's promotion back to Serie A as he continues his quest for a return to management. The Spaniard has been out of coaching since leaving Inter Milan 18 months ago and was recently linked with a return to Liverpool following Kenny Dalglish's exit. On Monday, following reports of a meeting between Benitez's representatives and Sampdoria, his agent Manuel Garcia Quilon stated there was 'no chance' of him taking over the Genoese club. However, Sampdoria's sporting director Pasquale Sensibile is not giving up on the possibility of bringing in Benitez as the club's new coach. "We are at a stage where we're looking around carefully, and today Benitez is just a thought for us," Sensibile told Sky Sport Italia. "The meeting with this person (a Benitez collaborator) was a way to understand if this idea and this dream can become a reality. "We have some more hope. I am moderately optimistic because I have noted that many ideas are similar, but right now the deal has not yet started."
