Alessandro Gamberini is facing up to two months on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.
The Fiorentina defender picked up the knock during Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Sampdoria.
Medical tests have calmed fears that he had suffered a broken bone, but he is still set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Surgery will be required in order to aid his recovery and he is expected to go under the knife later this week.
"He could play again within two months," said Fiorentina's club doctor Paolo Manetti.
Italy international Gamberini, who has been a first-team regular for the Viola this season, has recently been linked with a move to ambitious Premier League outfit Manchester City.
