Juventus have announced that Claudio Marchisio will have an operation on his injured knee on Saturday.
The midfielder sustained the problem to his left knee during Juve's 2-0 defeat at Palermo last weekend.
He was called up to the Italy squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Republic of Ireland and Cyprus but failed to recover sufficiently and had to withdraw.
Marchisio returned to Juventus and the Serie A club have now decided he should undergo surgery immediately.
The 23-year-old is not likely to be back in action for around a month and will miss important games for Juve, both domestically and in the UEFA Champions League.
