Giampaolo Pazzini is adamant that Sampdoria are top of the Serie A table on merit, although he admits winning the title is 'almost impossible'.
Sampdoria have won five of their opening six games and on Saturday they beat reigning champions Inter Milan 1-0 thanks to a goal from Pazzini midway through the second half.
The result took Luigi Del Neri's men to the top of the division and, whilst Pazzini does not expect it to last, he is proud of the success.
"It's beautiful to be up there alone, and it's not by chance. We are up there for the city, for the club, for how we work every day," Pazzini told the Italian press.
"The Scudetto is almost impossible. There are more equipped teams than us, but for now we are enjoying first place.
"We have important qualities. We started very strongly and very quickly, without ever being content with ourselves and we have to continue like that."
Pazzini's fantastic form has been a key factor behind Sampdoria's flying start and he now hopes to play alongside Sampdoria team-mate Antonio Cassano for Italy.
"To wear the blue shirt is everyone's dream," he enthused.
"It's Antonio's and mine, too. I play beside Cassano and I know what kind of a player he is.
"There is a strong media campaign in his favour, but the only thing Antonio has to do is continue playing like he is now."
