Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has warned Ezequiel Lavezzi he needs to show more commitment.
The Argentina international has been linked with a summer switch to Liverpool of late, with the player's agent helping to stoke the speculation.
Rafa Benitez has been quick to distance himself from the reports, while Napoli insist no offer has been received, but Lavezzi's head has been turned.
He is now believed to be holding out for an improved contract to stay in Italy, or seal a move elsewhere.
That has angered Napoli supremo De Laurentiis, who feels player power in the modern game is too great.
As a result, he has vowed to let Lavezzi rot in the reserves for the remainder of his contract at Stadio San Paolo should he continue to display a lack of loyalty.
"If he does, he will not play," said De Laurentiis.
"He will stay out of the side for the next two years. Imagine what damage that will do to his profile."
