Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini could miss the start of the new Serie A season with a knee injury.
The centre-half picked up the knock during a friendly against AC Milan on Sunday.
He was immediately withdrawn from the Italy squad to face Austria on Wednesday, but the full extent of the problem was not clear.
However, following a medical examination on Monday, Juventus club doctor Riccardo Agricola confirmed that the defender is facing a frustrating spell on the sidelines.
"Forty days off may be necessary to make a full recovery," he said.
While Chiellini will be disappointed to miss the start of the new campaign, he will be relieved to hear that there has suffered no ligament damage.
Juve are set to get their season underway at Fiorentina on 31st August.
