Striker linked with a return to Italy

Former Livorno striker Cristiano Lucarelli is moving closer to a return to Italy in the January transfer window. The 32-year-old is reportedly linked with a move to Serie A side Genoa. Lucarelli, who joined Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk on a four-year deal in the summer, is said to have opened talks with Genoa president Enrico Preziosi. The Italy international is hoping Shakhtar will allow him to leave the club on loan so that he can continue to play first-team football during the Ukrainian winter break.

On loan

He has already held talks with Donetsk manager Mircea Lucescu who has indicated he will allow the former Torino striker out on loan. "I've asked Shakthar about the possibility to continue playing because I don't want to loose the opportunity to play in the European Championships with the Italian national team," Lucarelli said. "I've already spoken with coach Mircea Lucescu about this and I'm convinced Shakhtar will help me find a solution."
