Alessandro Del Piero has confirmed he is only prepared to play for the Italian national team as a striker.
The Juventus star has been used in a variety of positions across the midfield by Italy coach Roberto Donadoni and he is beginning to grow frustrated.
Del Piero - who failed to impress as an attacking midfielder in the recent 0-0 draw with France - has now pleaded with Donadoni to pick him as a forward, or to not select him at all.
"On a few occasions I've played in a different role," Del Piero told Sky Italia.
"It is clear I take all the responsibilities, but I must say that this is the last time that it happens.
"In short, Donadoni can call me up if he needs a forward, otherwise he can leave me at home.
"I've already spoken with Donadoni and it's only fair that I be used in the position I consider to be mine, where I score goals, where I can be decisive and where I do good things.
"I would be very sorry to lose the chance to play for Italy. I am really keen on the national team and I would like to play in the 2008 European Championship.
"This is not blackmail, but a simple remark. As a forward I am able to influence the game, as a midfielder I'm not."
