Defender Marco Materazzi has admitted he got off extremely lightly after suffering a nasty thigh injury in Italy's friendly defeat to Hungary.
The former Everton stopper was in immense pain upon arriving back in Italy, so much so that he was looking forward to be knocked out to alleviate the agony.
It has since been confirmed Materazzi suffered a haemorrhage and he is now expected to undergo further tests to ascertain when he will be able to return to action.
"It's difficult to say what I felt at that moment," he told Inter Channel. "When I entered the dressing room the leg was swelling with each minute.
"Once in Italy I was looking forward to the doctors sedating me. I was in great pain, something I've never felt before. I was lucky with the choices we made.
"Deciding to fly home was a big decision as I had an internal haemorrhage and was risking a lot."
