Alberto Aquilani believes Roma will not be damaged by the sale of key defender Cristian Chivu.
Roma have sold Chivu to last season's runaway Serie A winners Internazionale, but Aquilani feels his side have still closed the gap on the champions.
Inter won the league by 22 points last term, but midfield star Aquilani insists it will be a lot tighter race this season.
"We have an unchanged squad except that we have lost Cristian and brought in some important players," said Aquilani.
"We weren't much worse than them last year, but we will get even closer this season."
Meanwhile, Roma look to have stepped up their hunt for a replacement for Chivu after the agent of Valencia defender Emiliano Moretti confirmed the Stadio Olimpico outfit are set to bid for the player.
"Emiliano is definitely part of Roma's plans and is highly considered by Coach Luciano Spalletti," the player's brother and agent Andrea Moretti told Radio Radio.
"He is certainly not on a plane towards Italy, but a move to the Giallorossi is an option that every once in a while is mentioned.
"We are obviously flattered by Roma's interest, they are an important club and it is Emiliano's hometown. I know there have been conversations between the two sides in the past."
Moretti is valued at £6.5million and it is not thought the Spanish side will let the 26-year-old leave on a loan deal.
