Alonso signs on at Sociedad

Mikel Alonso has inked a five-year contract extension with Real Sociedad.

Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Alonso has inked a five-year contract extension with the Primera outfit.

There had been some speculation that the 25-year-old, older brother of Liverpool's Xabi, would quit Real on free when his contract expired at the end of the season.

Teams in both Spain and England had been credited with an interest in the player who has been one of Sociedad's most consistent performers over the past couple of seasons.

However, Alonso has opted to prolong his stay at the Anoeta where, like his brother, he came through the youth ranks.

"Real are my club, it's here I became a footballer and I want to continue playing for them," he stated.

"I am very happy. It's a long contract and I signed it because I am satisfied with it."

The five-year deal also contains an option to extend it for a further 12 months should both parties agree.

Another boost for Sociedad is the news that Frenchman Jeremie Brechet is back in full training following a long-standing knee injury.

The former Internazionale star has not played this term because of the complaint, but could now return to first-team action within a couple of weeks.

Meanwhile, the Basque outfit are still locked in talks with Danish striker Morten Skoubo about a £1.7 million move from Brondby with reports suggesting a deal could be finalised on Friday.
