Real Sociedad are confident that midfielder Mikel Aranburu will be able to play again after surgery to rebuild his knee proved a success.

The 26-year-old ruptured the anterior and lateral ligaments in his right knee and tore the medial ligament during his side's game at Racing Santander on Sunday.

Such was the severity of the injury there were fears he might not make a full recovery, but Sociedad doctors declared themselves 'satisfied' with the way reconstructive surgery on the player had gone on Tuesday.

"We are very satisfied with the result as we believe we have achieved an excellent reconstruction of everything Mikel had broken," stated club doctor Eduardo Escobar.

"I admit we were fearing for Mikel's career, but after the operation we are infinitely more optimistic than on Sunday and we think he will recover despite the seriousness of the injury.

"Mikel is a very sensible lad and he has accepted this serious situation with great calmness.

"There was some tension last weekend when he found out the true extent of the injury, but he will come through it an even better person."

Aranburu has been told to give his leg complete rest for the next three weeks whereupon he will begin a rehabilitation programme and set off on the long road back to fitness which is expected to take a minimum of eight months.
