Mikel Alonso is poised to commit his long-term future to Real Sociedad by signing a new contract.

There has been speculation that the midfielder, brother of Liverpool's Xabi, would choose to leave the club in the summer.

He is currently contracted to the Basque outfit until June 2006, but his displays are understood to have caught the eye of a number of clubs both in Spain and England.

The 25-year-old established himself as a first-team regular for Sociedad last term, making a total of 35 appearances in the league.

He has carried that consistent form into this campaign and continues to be a fixture in Real's engine room.

The Primera outfit are now ready to reward him and fend off interest from suitors by handing him an extended deal.

The player's agent, Inaki Ibanez, has already met Sociedad director of sport Jose Mari Bakero and is close to agreeing a contract that will run until 2009 or 2010.

Despite the interest in him, Alonso is keen to remain at the Anoeta and is expected to put pen-to-paper in the coming days.
